چکیده

A study was performed to investigate the potential impacts in the cloud masking capability of the AVHRR on NOAA polar orbiting satellites due to the addition of the of 1.6 μm channel (ch3a) and the removal of the 3.75 μm channel (ch3b) during daylight operation. Both channels are measured by the AVHRR but only one of them are available in the data-stream. Because the AVHRR presents the longest time series of global imager data, this change could potentially impact a critical source of climate data. Specifically, changes in its cloud masking capability may introduce a discontinuity in its derived clear-sky data-records. To study the relative cloud detection capabilities of the AVHRR with ch3a or ch3b, data from MODIS/TERRA was used because it offers both ch3a, ch3b and the other AVHRR channels simultaneously. The MODIS data analysis indicated that ch3b offered more capability in separating cloud from snow. Cloud masking results with ch3a and ch3b performed comparably in separating cloud from aerosol and in detecting cloud over a desert scene.

Multi-Sensor Calibration Studies of AVHRR-Heritage Channel Radiances Using the Simultaneous Nadir Observation Approach

The European Space Agency project for studies of cloud properties in the Climate Change Initiative programme (ESA-CLOUD-CCI) aims at compiling the longest possible time series of cloud products from one single multispectral sensor—The five-channel Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) instrument. A particular aspect here is to include corresponding products based on other existing (M...

Distribution and Validation of Cloud Cover Derived from AVHRR Data Over the Arctic Ocean During the SHEBA Year

Determination of cloud radiation interactions over large areas of the Arctic is possible only with the use of data from polar orbiting satellites. Cloud detection using satellite data is difficult in the Arctic due to the minimal contrast between clouds and the underlying snow surface in visible and infrared wavelengths. Polar clouds are frequently warmer or at the same brightness temperature a...

Remote Sensing of Cirrus Cloud Parameters Based on a 0 . 63 - 3 . 7 μ m Radiance Correlation Technique Applied to AVHRR Data

Using the data gathered from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) 0.63 and 3.7 μm channels, an algorithm for the inference of cirrus cloud optical depth and mean effective size has been developed for the first time. This scheme is based on the correlation between the 3.7 μm (total) and 0.63 μm radiances that is constructed from radiative transfer calculations involving ice cryst...

Modis Observations of Deep Convective Cloud Tops

Past studies of the NOAA AVHRR/2 and GOES I-M imagery (e.g., Setvák et al., 1996) have shown that frozen tops of deep convective storms occasionally exhibit significant increase of cloud top reflectivity when observed in the 3.7 or 3.9 μm spectral bands. Similar storm top features have been documented in the NOAA-KLM AVHRR/3 1.6 μm spectral band (Setvák et al., 2003). Consequently, cross-compar...

برآورد تابش خورشید رسیده به زمین با استفاده از تصاویر ماهواره نوا و روابط آماری در جنوب شرق تهران

In this study, the remote sensing statistical approach was used to determine the global solar radiation from NOAA-AVHRR satellite data in southeast of Tehran. This approach is based on the linear correlation between a satellite derived cloud index and the atmospheric transmission measured by the clearness index on the ground. A multiple linear regression model was also used to convert the five ...
